To determine if this is happening, select View > Shadows > On-screen Shadows, and then scroll down to Shadows > Skipped Shadows and Shadows > Culled Shadows. Any active shadows in the list will be culled. As your distance to an obstruction increases, more shadows are culled.
Culling: Depending on your other settings, this affects the number of active shadows rendered for each pixel. The more shadows, the more work that goes into lighting each pixel. In any case, the number of shadows visible on-screen will vary, depending on the detail level of the shadows.
In addition, shadows are culled in scenes that use lighting too close to the camera and/or are on surfaces that obstruct visibility. This may include walls, and if shadows are active and culled on-screen, then they're also rendered in-game. For example, in a large open world, fewer shadows will be needed, but if the player is close to a wall, then the shadows will be culled and therefore not rendered on-screen.
Culled shadows don't mean that a pixel hasn't been lit at all - think of it as a 'Not Visible' flag, and a more accurate description would be 'Not lit, and not visible on-screen'. If you're not seeing shadows, then it means that culling is in action, and more than one shadow is not being rendered for each pixel.
Sorting: This field is only relevant when Sorting Method is set to 'By Distance'. If you're not using Distance Sorting, then all shadows are rendered, and the order in which they are rendered is irrelevant.
Although the vast majority of players are likely to be using Superior Settings by default, it's still worth checking your system's Hardware and seeing if you can scale back to 'Standard' before enabling High Resolution Shadows.
